Applications for the 2024 University of Birmingham Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship are now available. One scholarship is offered by the International Development Department, University of Birmingham, MSc Development Policy and Politics, with Mo Ibrahim Foundation Internship.

Scholarship Details:
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is providing the scholarship for a two-year program. The winning candidate will complete the fully funded one-year MSc program and a coordinated one-year internship. The internship allows the candidate to spend six months with IDD on research projects with academics and the GSDRC and the following six months in London with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Undergo work with the team on a number of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at positioning governance right at the core of Africa’s development. This includes participating in the Now Generation Forum portion of the Ibrahim Forum and the Ibrahim Governance Weekend.
Program Overview:
Introducing a unique and instant connection between the academic and real-world policy when it comes to development: this is both grounded in theory and evidence. IDD’s ground-breaking research on governance, leadership, democracy, and think-and-work politically is incorporated into its teaching. Students undergo experience of exploration, innovation, rigour, complexity, and controversy, linking proper theories and real-world situations.
Foundation Scholarship Pathway Modules
Foundation Scholarship Pathway Modules Modules required for the Foundation scholarship include:
- International Development 20 credits.
- Development Policy and Politics 20 credits
- Dissertation 60 credits : A specialization in a particular area, with support from a mentor. Overseas fieldwork may be required on a subject chosen by the candidate.
Choose one of the following modules:
- Governance and State-building (20 credits)
- Democracy, Dictatorship and Development (20 credits)
Optional modules (60 credits):
Choose from any module across the School of Government. Alternatively, you may select a module from another school or college with the agreement of the Programme Director.
Eligibility Criteria
Application criteria:
- Applicants shall meet the following requirements:
- A first class Honours degree at the group of recognized universities.
- Younger than 30 years of age at the time of application.
- Good competence of English reading and writing skills. Candidates must provide proof of competency for non-native English speakers. The following minimum scores for the IELTS or TOEFL exam are set: 6.5 or 580/93 TOEFL respectively. Please refer to the University’s website for full English language requirements.
- African nationals residing or belonging to an African nation. Candidates for scholarships are preferred to be residing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Scholarship Details
The scholarship covers:
- Full tuition fees
- Airfare to and from the United Kingdom, as well as visa expenses
- Monthly stipend of £950 for 18 months
- Arrival allowance of £950
The remaining six months for the internship will be funded directly to the successful candidate by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted through the University’s online application system by 8 April 2024. In addition to the standard documents, applicants must also upload a 500-word statement and CV. The statement should explain why the applicant is the best candidate for the scholarship.
