    African Water and Sanitation Association is announcing the Young Water and Sanitation Professionals Research grants Competition, in the ambit of its capacity building program for the African actors in water-sanitation-hygiene – Africap – funded by USAID. These grants target master level students and pending engineers, meaning those whose training is almost finishing. The new scholarships will be awarded in the three next years to students in many African countries . For the 2021-2022 academic year, fifteen scholarships were granted to students of 13 countries . For the 2022-2023 academic year, an additional twenty scholarships will be granted to students of 16 countries . Among the selected students, 15 were awarded by USAID as part of the Africap grants and the other 5 were awarded to young women by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through SAO CWIS due to the existing disparities between male and female students in the section. In the third and last year 2023-2024, 15 scholarships will be awarded to students around Africa.

    Research Themes

    For the 2023-2024 academic year, the following themes have been chosen for the scholarship program:

    • Approaches to reducing Unrevenue Water in water companies
    • Improvement of Water Quality
    • Water services in low-income urban areas
    • Improvement of urban & peri-urban sanitation
    • Use of ICT (digital tools) in water and sanitation services

    • Climate change

    Benefits

    As part of this scholarship, each beneficiary is eligible for a maximum amount of 1,000 US Dollars.

    • Sixty percent (60%) of this amount will be disbursed to the beneficiary upon finalization and approval of the detailed research project plan by the research supervisor and receipt by the AAEA Research and Capacity Building Program.
    • The remaining forty percent (40%) will be paid once the recipient submits the electronic copy of their final research report.

    Application Process

    Candidates interested in the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

    • Citizenship of a sub-Saharan African country eligible for USAID funding.
    • Good academic standing with their institution.
    • Submission of an application file including:
      • Copy of student card or registration receipt for the current year (Master 2).
      • The Bachelor’s degree.
      • Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages).
      • Three letters of recommendation (one from the academic supervisor) certifying the student’s enrollment in Master 2.
      • The project sheet (available for download).

    During the selection process, priority will be given to students and young water professionals who are members of the AAEA.

    L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program

    The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents programme is designed to encourage the involvement of youthful women in science in Yemen and the GCC Countries, which include UAE, KSA, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. This program aims to detect and award young female talents scientists whose key disciplines are Life Sciences, among others, biology, biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, physiology, neurosciences, biotechnologies, ecology, and ethology or Physical Sciences, among others, physics, chemistry, petroleum engineering, mathematics, engineering sciences, information sciences, Earth and Universe sciences. The Program rewards six young Arab women of talent with their research works and is diligent in pursuing a magnificent career in science in Yemen and GCC countries.

    Postdoctoral Researchers:

    Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

    • Hold a PhD in one of the science fields mentioned in paragraph 1.
    • Be a national of an Arab country.
    • Be employed in a Research, Laboratory, Institute, or University in one of the countries mentioned in paragraph 1.
    • Candidates must be no older than 45 years (Born in 1979 and beyond, considering the year of birth).

    PhD Students:

    Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

    • Hold a Bachelor (B.Sc.) and a Master (M.Sc.) degrees, or equivalent, in one of the science fields mentioned in paragraph 1.
    • Be a full-time student in a PhD program and registered during 2023-2024 in the 2nd year of the PhD program, or one year before the thesis defense.
    • Be a national of an Arab country.
    • Be employed in a Research Laboratory, Institute, or University in one of the countries mentioned in paragraph 1.
    • Candidates must be no older than 35 years (born in 1989 and beyond, considering the year of birth).

    Selection Criteria.

    The jury will consider:

    • Outstanding Academic Record: The quality of the candidate’s academic record, including publications, patents, and presentations at scientific conferences, etc .
    • The scientific quality of the research performed: the academic jury will evaluate proposed research project on the basis of these criteria too .
    • Ethical considerations: candidates must strictly comply with the above-mentioned ethical code at all stages of the scientific activity ;
    • Innovation: candidates for the Research Award must provide the jury with description of their project and its outcomes or applications: all information must be original, and the scientific project must be relevant ;
    • Communication skills: candidates to the Award must be able to communicate, and, more importantly, to attract the attention of younger members of the science community: mainly, the project funded through the grant in question should support aspiring Arab female scientists ;
    • Career intentions of the candidate: if a successful scholar knows what to expect from further career, the award is more likely to benefit the international scientific community ;
    • A completed application: detailed description of the project and its methodology must be provided in the application document ;
    • Consideration of animal testing: representatives of the ISMR, including scholars, must provide an assessment of research based on the consideration regarding animal testing and justification of possible use.

    Guidelines Regarding Animal Testing

    • Rejection of Any Suffering Project: Any project involving experimental protocols that may cause animals to suffer will be rejected, even if approved by an ad hoc ethics committee.
    • Animal Experimentation Introduced: If animal experimentation is an integral part of the applicant’s research, it must be described in detail. Justification for reasons such as the absence of acceptable alternatives must be provided, and the jury may evaluate or seek clarification on this aspect.
    • Ethical Avoidance of Animals’ Suffering: Applicants must publicly commit to avoiding animal suffering during the project to be eligible for grants. This commitment will be included in the application forms and officially announced.
    • Non-Laboratory Funding Replacement: Grants are intended for scientific research purposes and should not serve as a substitute for laboratory funding commitments to researchers.
    • Non-Renewability of Grants: Grants cannot be renewed under any circumstances. However, they may be combined with other research grants.

    Empowering Youth in Climate Action

    It is now understood that young people have a central role to play. They are negotiators, innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs and change agents. However, they largely lack the technical, financial and political means to execute their dreams.

    To bridge this gap, the Government of Italy and the United Nations Development Programme founded a global Youth4Climate initiative joining forces with several knowledge partners and youth constituencies. Its mission is to find, advance and amplify climate cures created by organizations led by young people through:

    Call for Solutions: Youth4Climate

    The second edition of the Y4C Call for Solutions is a youth-centered innovation challenge that intended to further efforts by young people and youth-led organizations in each of its five thematic areas: Climate and Environment Literacy; Sustainable Energy; Affordable, Clean, and Sustainable production, and consumption; Land and Ocean Sinks; Food and Agriculture.

    Award and Support

    Successful applicants will receive the following:

    • Up to US$ 30,000 to implement or scale their proposed innovations.
    • Access to technical support to enhance their capacity in specific areas.
    • Mentorship to refine and develop their proposals.
    • Opportunities for storytelling during upcoming events of the Youth4Climate initiative, as well as through the Youth4Climate Platform and UNDP’s website along with its partners.

    The Generation Connect Young Leadership Programme (GCYLP):

    ITU and Huawei’s GCYLP program is a promising initiative to engage and inspire youth as digital leaders and change-makers. As a part of the partnership, thirty young fellows each year are appointed and provided with mentorship, training, and financial support to implement their digital development projects in different communities around the world.

    Thirty young fellows annually are supported to implement digital development projects in their communities around the globe. This program is a unique chance for young leaders to demonstrate their innovative digital projects implemented from scratch or focused on promoting current infrastructural solutions.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Age Requirement: Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 28 by the application deadline of Saturday, March 23, 2024.
    • Interest in Leadership: Applicants should demonstrate an interest in leading and implementing a digital development project.
    • Educational Background: Applicants must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a tertiary education institution in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) or a demonstrably STEM-related academic program.
    • Proficiency in English: Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English, as it is the main language of the program. This language proficiency ensures that all fellows can fully benefit from the planned offerings of trainings, networking opportunities, and events.

    Benefits:

    • Curated Programming: Participants will engage in year-long virtual leadership training activities organized by ITU and Huawei. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to participate in an in-person global training week (location to be confirmed), enhancing their capacity as digital changemakers.
    • Funding: Each selected fellow will receive up to USD 10,000 in grant funding for their youth-led project. Initially, all 30 fellows will receive a USD 5,000 grant to support the implementation of their proposed digital development projects. Furthermore, the most impactful projects at the end of the year will receive an additional USD 5,000 grant to scale up their initiatives.

    Selection Process:

    • Shortlisting: Initially, ITU and Huawei staff will conduct a first round of application reading. By mid-April 2024, shortlisted candidates will receive an invitation to provide ID documentation, a video, and two different references within four days for the final round of selection.
    • Final Selection: The GCYLP Jury will hold a final selection meeting to choose the 30 fellows of the cohort. The announcement of the fellows is targeted for early May 2024.
